It is hard to fathom it was found almost by accident. Working mostly as a session singer in Amsterdam, Emerald got her big break when she was asked to sing on a demo for a Japanese artist on Back It Up. It became the lead single from her platinum-selling debut album Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor.

Emerald has chosen a good time to unleash her talent, as the 40s-style jazz and big band blues sound has undergone a significant revival. Her smouldering vocals effortlessly take us through the tracks from her LP and the energetic band complements her well. There are undertones of hip hop, jive, reggae and electro-pop in her songs. Singles That Man and A Night Like This were saved for the first encore and the Bridgewater Hall erupted with adoration.

By the time the jive-tastic Stuck comes along the sell-out crowd is on its feet.This was Emerald’s first visit to Manchester. And from tonight’s showing, it won’t be her last.

THE ECHO AWARDS

I've been nominated for two Echo awards,  the main German music award and one of the most prestigious worldwide. Since 1992 the award show has featured performances of  successful international musicians (last years red carpet).

''I’m heading straight to Berlin to attend the Echo Awards tomorrow. I’m so nervous! There will be a huge and impressive line up and I’m actually nominated for 2 categories: Newcomer International and Female Artist Rock/Pop International (together with my all-time favorites Amy Winehouse and Adele). There will be a reception and a red carpet and a huge after party ;-) Still trying to decide on what to wear, stress!! It will be broadcasted live tomorrow night on ARD 1 so you’ll be able to check out the result once I finally make my decision. Wish me luck! Ciao! XXX''

Caro Emerald's album, Deleted Scenes From the Cutting Room Floor, evoked those big band jazz albums from the 1940s and 1950s, and as you would have read in Graeme Thomson's story last week in The Herald, that was exactly what was intended.

So it was very pleasing to see her stage was set up as if Count Basie was about to appear.

All was not exactly what it seemed. Basie did not include a DJ in his line-up and with the band on stage and into their groove, Emerald was introduced by some inventive scratching from the man on the decks, giving the impression that Max Headroom was doing the honours. She launched into You Don't Love Me with the confidence of an artist who has spent several years touring these songs and building a devoted fan base.

Her band was sensational, with a killer horn section. While the presence of a DJ might have been, at best, incongruous, the contrast between his atmospheric electronics and the retro musical style of the band gave some of these songs an almost surreal edge.

The most impressive instrument on display was that voice. Emerald is an excellent jazz singer and really belted out songs like Dr Wanna Do and set closer A Night like This. Back It Up, the song which made her name in the first place, was a celebration, Emerald switching effortlessly to a sort of 1950s hip-hop. But it was the first encore, an unused song from the album sessions, Close To Me, which was my pick of the night. Acoustic jazz, no DJ, her voice flowing over the audience like warm treacle, it was absolutely gorgeous.

Caro Emerald has won the prestigious Goldene Kamera Award for "Beste Musik International".
This was announced this morning on www.goldenekamera.de.
The Goldene Kamera award gala is a yearly event hosted by Hörzu (a German weekly television listings magazine). The award is handed out during the gala taking place on the fourth of February in Berlin and will be broadcasted live by the ZDF.
